Evidence supporting the use of: Omega-3 fatty acids
For the health condition: Hair Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Omega-3 fatty acids are often promoted for general hair care, and there is some scientific evidence to support their role in maintaining hair health, although the overall quality and quantity of evidence is limited. Omega-3s, particularly EPA and DHA found in fish oil, have anti-inflammatory properties and are essential components of cell membranes, including those in the scalp and hair follicles. Some small clinical studies and case reports suggest that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids may reduce hair thinning, improve hair density, and increase hair growth, especially when hair loss is related to inflammation or poor nutrition. For example, a 2015 randomized controlled trial found that a supplement containing omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids improved hair density and reduced telogen effluvium in women. However, studies are often limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and the use of combination supplements rather than omega-3s alone, making it difficult to isolate their specific effects. While there is a plausible biological mechanism, and some clinical support, stronger evidence from large, well-controlled trials is needed to firmly establish efficacy. Nevertheless, omega-3 fatty acids are considered safe for most people and may be beneficial for those with deficiencies or inflammatory scalp conditions.
