Evidence supporting the use of: Malt (Barley)
For the health condition: Hair Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Barley malt has a historical association with hair care, largely rooted in traditional use rather than robust scientific validation. In various cultures, malt extracts or barley-based preparations have been used as tonics or ingredients in shampoos, believed to nourish the scalp and hair. The rationale typically stems from the presence of nutrients in malted barley, such as B vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, which are considered beneficial for general hair health. However, scientific studies specifically investigating the direct effects of barley malt on hair growth or hair health are sparse. Most evidence remains anecdotal or is based on the general nutritional profile of barley. While B vitamins, particularly biotin, are important for hair health, there is little to no direct clinical evidence that topical or oral barley malt significantly improves hair condition compared to other sources. The continued use of malt (barley) in traditional remedies and some commercial hair care products is therefore mostly justified by historical use and its nutrient content, rather than by rigorous scientific research.
