Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Sulfur plays a well-established role in supporting the health of the hair, as well as skin and nails, primarily due to its involvement in the formation of keratin—a key structural protein in these tissues. Sulfur is an essential element in two amino acids, cysteine and methionine, with cysteine being especially important for the synthesis of keratin. Scientific studies confirm that a deficiency in sulfur amino acids can lead to weakened hair structure and brittleness. Additionally, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), a sulfur-containing compound, has been investigated in several small clinical trials for its effect on hair health. Some studies and anecdotal reports suggest MSM supplementation may improve hair shine, strength, and growth, though research is limited and larger, well-controlled studies are needed for conclusive evidence. Historically, sulfur has also been used topically (e.g., in shampoos or ointments) to treat dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, conditions that can affect the scalp and hair growth. Overall, while the biological rationale and some preliminary research support sulfur’s role in hair health, the direct evidence from high-quality clinical trials is moderate. Thus, sulfur’s use for supporting the hair system is justified both by its clear biochemical role and by emerging, though not yet definitive, scientific validation.
