Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Selenium yeast is a commonly used dietary supplement that provides selenium, an essential trace mineral. Scientific evidence supports the importance of selenium for normal hair growth and maintenance, as selenium is involved in antioxidant defense and thyroid hormone metabolism, both of which can impact hair health. Selenium deficiency has been associated with hair loss (alopecia) in humans, and supplementation can reverse hair loss caused specifically by deficiency. However, there is limited evidence that selenium yeast supplementation improves hair health or prevents hair loss in individuals who are not selenium deficient. Most studies and clinical guidance emphasize that while adequate selenium is necessary for hair health, excess selenium can actually cause hair loss and other adverse effects. The form of selenium in selenium yeast, selenomethionine, is well absorbed and bioavailable. In summary, while selenium yeast is scientifically justified for supporting the hair system in the context of deficiency, routine supplementation for hair health in well-nourished populations is not strongly supported by robust clinical trials.
