Evidence supporting the use of: Norwegian Kelp
For the body system: Hair
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Norwegian Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum) has been traditionally used as a natural source of iodine and other minerals, and its use in supporting hair health is primarily rooted in traditional and folk medicine, rather than robust scientific evidence. Iodine deficiency can cause thyroid dysfunction, which in turn may lead to hair thinning or loss, and thus kelp—being rich in iodine—has been recommended in traditional practices to support healthy hair via thyroid support. However, direct scientific studies specifically linking Norwegian Kelp supplementation to improved hair health, growth, or prevention of hair loss are limited or lacking. The traditional rationale is that optimal iodine intake supports thyroid hormone production, and healthy thyroid function is essential for normal hair growth and maintenance. In summary, while there is a plausible biological mechanism based on iodine’s role in thyroid health and the indirect impact on hair, the use of Norwegian Kelp specifically for hair support is largely traditional and not directly validated by clinical trials or targeted scientific studies.
