Babchi (Psoralea corylifolia) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for promoting hair health. In Ayurveda, Babchi seeds and their oil are commonly used in formulations aimed at treating various skin and hair conditions, particularly for supporting hair growth and alleviating disorders such as alopecia and premature graying. The traditional rationale is based on Babchi’s reputed ability to stimulate melanogenesis (the production of melanin), which may help in restoring hair color, and its purported benefits for scalp health due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

However, modern scientific evidence supporting Babchi’s effectiveness for hair growth or other aspects of hair health is limited. While some studies have identified compounds in Babchi, such as psoralen, that have biological activity—particularly in relation to skin pigmentation (as in the treatment of vitiligo)—robust clinical data specifically validating its use for hair growth or hair health are lacking. Most contemporary references to Babchi for hair rely on its historical use rather than on controlled scientific trials. As such, while Babchi is traditionally used to support the hair body system, the overall level of evidence is modest and primarily anecdotal or based on traditional practices.
