Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is scientifically validated as important for gum (periodontal) health. Research indicates that vitamin C is essential for the synthesis and maintenance of collagen, a key protein in connective tissues, including those in the gums. Deficiency in vitamin C leads to scurvy, a disease characterized by bleeding and inflamed gums, tooth loss, and poor wound healing. Numerous studies have shown that inadequate vitamin C intake is linked to increased risk of periodontal disease, which includes symptoms like gum bleeding and inflammation. Observational studies in humans suggest that individuals with higher vitamin C intake tend to have healthier gums and a lower prevalence of periodontal disease. While vitamin C supplementation does not cure established periodontitis, it can help prevent gum problems in people with marginal or deficient vitamin C status. Most scientific reviews agree that adequate dietary vitamin C is necessary to maintain healthy gums, but supplementation above the recommended dietary allowance does not confer additional benefits in healthy individuals. Thus, the use of vitamin C to support gum health has strong scientific support, especially in the context of deficiency prevention.
