Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin C (Ascorbate)
For the body system: Gums
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Vitamin C (ascorbate) has a well-established scientific basis for supporting gum (periodontal) health. Deficiency in vitamin C is directly linked to the development of scurvy, a disease characterized by bleeding, swollen, and inflamed gums, as well as loosening of teeth. The role of vitamin C in gum health is primarily due to its function in collagen synthesis, which is essential for maintaining the integrity of connective tissue in the gums. Numerous studies have demonstrated that adequate vitamin C intake helps maintain healthy gums and reduces the risk of gingival inflammation and periodontal disease. For example, research published in the "Journal of Periodontology" and other dental journals indicates that individuals with low vitamin C intake are more likely to experience periodontal disease symptoms. Supplementation with vitamin C has been shown to help reduce gum bleeding and inflammation in those with deficiency. Although vitamin C supplementation alone is not a cure for advanced gum disease, its role in prevention and as adjunctive support for gum tissue health is well established and supported by clinical and epidemiological studies. Thus, the use of vitamin C to support gum health is justified by robust scientific evidence.
