Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Terminalia ferdinandiana, commonly known as Kakadu plum, has a longstanding history of use among Indigenous Australians, including for oral health and gum problems. Traditionally, the fruit and its extracts were used as a topical treatment for sores, wounds, and infections, which likely extended to the gums and oral cavity. The high vitamin C content and presence of polyphenolic compounds such as ellagic acid contribute to its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. There is some preliminary scientific evidence that extracts from Terminalia ferdinandiana exhibit antibacterial activity against oral pathogens, potentially supporting its use for oral and gum health. However, robust clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy for gum disease or other gum conditions are lacking. Most of the support for its use in the context of the gum body system is based on traditional knowledge and limited in vitro studies, rather than high-quality human clinical evidence. Thus, while there is a plausible scientific basis and a strong tradition of use, the overall level of evidence remains moderate.
