Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Silverweed (Potentilla anserina) has been used traditionally in European herbal medicine, including as a remedy for oral and gum health. Folk medicine texts from the 19th and early 20th centuries describe its use as a mouthwash or gargle to soothe sore gums and treat minor mouth irritations, attributed largely to its astringent properties due to tannins in the plant. These astringent compounds could theoretically help tighten tissues and reduce minor bleeding, similar to the historical use of other tannin-rich herbs. However, there is a lack of modern clinical studies or rigorous scientific validation specifically evaluating Silverweed’s efficacy for gum health. The evidence is therefore primarily traditional, based on anecdotal reports and ethnobotanical records rather than controlled clinical trials. Thus, while its historical use for supporting gum health is documented, there is insufficient scientific evidence to strongly support its effectiveness for this purpose.
