Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sicilian Sumac (Rhus coriaria) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures. It has been valued for its astringent, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. In traditional applications, sumac has been employed as a remedy for oral health issues, including sore gums and mouth ulcers. Its astringent quality, derived from tannins, is believed to help tighten tissues and reduce bleeding, which could be beneficial for minor gum irritation. Additionally, sumac contains organic acids and polyphenolic compounds that may inhibit the growth of some oral pathogens. However, while there is some in vitro and animal research suggesting antimicrobial effects of sumac extracts against oral bacteria, high-quality clinical trials in humans specifically examining its impact on gum health are lacking. As a result, the primary justification for using Sicilian Sumac to support the gums is traditional rather than strongly evidence-based, and the scientific support for its efficacy in oral care remains limited.
