Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asia and Eastern Europe, for supporting oral health, including the gums. Traditional uses have included topical application of sea buckthorn oil or extracts to the gums for their purported healing and anti-inflammatory properties. The plant is rich in vitamins (such as vitamin C and E), flavonoids, and fatty acids, which are believed to contribute to tissue repair and reduction of inflammation.

Scientific research specifically on sea buckthorn’s effects on gum health is limited. A few small studies and animal models have indicated that sea buckthorn extracts may have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically benefit the gums by reducing inflammation and inhibiting the growth of oral pathogens. However, robust clinical trials focusing directly on gum health in humans are lacking.

The continued use of sea buckthorn for gum health is primarily based on traditional practice and the general recognition of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory components. While these components have plausible mechanisms for supporting tissue repair and reducing inflammation, the direct evidence for efficacy in gum support remains modest. Thus, the use of sea buckthorn for this body system is justified more by tradition than by strong scientific validation.
