Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Plantago species, such as Plantago major (greater plantain), have a long history of traditional use in supporting oral health, including the gums. In various traditional medicine systems, Plantago leaves have been applied topically or used as mouth rinses to soothe inflamed gums, treat minor oral wounds, and promote overall gum health. The leaves contain bioactive compounds such as aucubin, flavonoids, and tannins, which are thought to confer anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and astringent effects. These properties are believed to help reduce gum irritation and support healing of minor oral lesions. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys document the use of Plantago poultices and infusions for oral care in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

However, while these traditional uses are well-documented, scientific validation specifically for gum health is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Plantago may possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that could theoretically benefit the gums. Yet, high-quality human clinical trials directly assessing the impact of Plantago preparations on gingival health are lacking. As such, its primary justification for use in supporting the gums is rooted in traditional practice rather than robust scientific evidence.
