Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Plantago, particularly Plantago major (commonly known as plantain), has a long history of traditional use for supporting oral health, including the gums. Herbal medicine texts and folk practices from Europe and Asia have described the external application of Plantago leaves or extracts for treating wounds, inflammation, and infections, including in the mouth. The mucilaginous properties of Plantago help soothe irritated tissues, and its purported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects are thought to aid in healing minor gum issues or mouth sores. While there are historical records and ethnobotanical surveys supporting its use in oral health, direct scientific studies specifically evaluating Plantago for gum health are limited. Laboratory studies have shown that Plantago extracts possess anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically benefit gum tissues. However, clinical trials in humans focusing on gum health are lacking, and most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional use rather than modern research. In summary, the use of Plantago for supporting gum health is justified largely by traditional and historical practices, with only indirect scientific support from laboratory findings on its general anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. More rigorous clinical research would be needed to provide stronger scientific validation for its efficacy in gum health.
