Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Jaboticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora) is a fruit native to Brazil and has a long history of use in traditional South American medicine. Its use for supporting gum health and the oral cavity primarily stems from folk practices, where the fruit and its extracts have been employed for their purported anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. In Brazil, decoctions made from the fruit peel or bark have sometimes been used as a topical rinse or gargle for conditions such as sore throats, mouth ulcers, and gum inflammation. However, there is very limited scientific literature specifically investigating jaboticaba’s effects on gum (periodontal) health. Most of the available scientific research on jaboticaba focuses on its antioxidant content, especially anthocyanins, and its potential anti-inflammatory effects in general health or metabolic conditions, rather than targeted studies on oral or gum health. Therefore, while traditional use supports its application for the gums, there is a lack of rigorous clinical evidence to validate its efficacy for this body system. The evidence rating is low, reflecting reliance on tradition over science.
