Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, including for oral health and gum-related issues. Traditionally, Boswellia extracts and resins have been used for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which are believed to help soothe inflamed gums and maintain oral hygiene. However, the scientific evidence specifically supporting Indian frankincense for gum health is limited and not robust. While some laboratory and animal studies indicate that Boswellia serrata extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, few clinical studies directly assess its efficacy for periodontal or gum health in humans. One small clinical trial (Singh et al., 2011) found that a mouthwash containing Boswellia extract improved some indicators of gum health, but the study size was limited, and results have not been widely replicated. Most uses for gum health remain based on traditional knowledge rather than strong scientific validation. Consequently, while traditional use is established, more rigorous human trials are needed to confirm its benefits for the gums.
