Rating (out of 5): 2

Goldthread (Coptis chinensis) is a traditional herb used in Chinese and other East Asian medicines. Its primary active compound, berberine, is known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Historically, goldthread has been used to treat various oral health issues, including gum disease, mouth ulcers, and sore throats. In traditional Chinese medicine, goldthread preparations such as mouth rinses or topical applications are used to "clear heat" and reduce inflammation, which aligns with symptoms of gingivitis and other gum conditions.

There is some preliminary scientific evidence that berberine can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens implicated in periodontal disease, and it may reduce inflammation in the gums. However, the majority of its application for gum health is based on historical use rather than robust modern clinical trials. While berberine-containing mouthwashes have been studied for their effectiveness against certain bacteria, direct evidence for goldthread itself in large-scale human studies is lacking. Therefore, the justification for its use in supporting gum health remains primarily traditional, with limited but suggestive scientific support.
