Evidence supporting the use of: Cinnamomum burmanii
For the body system: Gums
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cinnamomum burmanii, commonly known as Indonesian cinnamon, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine. Its applications include supporting oral health, including the gums, primarily due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties recognized in folk medicine. Traditional practices in various cultures have employed cinnamon extracts and powders as mouthwashes or tooth powders to help freshen breath and maintain oral hygiene, which indirectly supports gum health by reducing the bacterial load that can contribute to gum disease.
Scientific studies specifically examining Cinnamomum burmanii and gum health are limited. However, research on related Cinnamomum species and cinnamon extracts in general shows some antibacterial activity against oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans, which is implicated in dental plaque formation and gingivitis. While these findings provide a plausible basis for cinnamon's traditional use in oral care, there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence directly linking Cinnamomum burmanii to improved gum health or the prevention of periodontal disease. Thus, its use for supporting the gums is primarily justified by tradition, and the scientific support remains preliminary.
