Evidence supporting the use of: Camphor
For the body system: Gums
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Camphor has a long history of traditional use in oral care, including applications aimed at supporting gum health. In various cultures, especially in South Asia, camphor has been included in herbal preparations and home remedies for oral ailments such as gingivitis and sore gums. Its cooling sensation and purported antimicrobial properties are believed to provide temporary relief from discomfort and minor irritation of the gums. However, the scientific support for these uses is minimal. While camphor does exhibit mild antimicrobial and analgesic effects in vitro, there is little to no clinical research specifically validating its efficacy for gum health when used in oral care products or remedies. The use of camphor in the mouth is also associated with safety concerns, as ingestion or excessive topical application can be toxic, particularly for children. Mainstream dental organizations do not recommend camphor for gum health, and over-the-counter oral health products rarely contain camphor as an active ingredient for this purpose. In summary, while camphor’s use for gum support is grounded in tradition, particularly in folk medicine, there is insufficient scientific evidence to substantiate its effectiveness, and safety considerations further limit its appropriateness in modern oral health care.
