Evidence supporting the use of: Calendula
For the body system: Gums
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Calendula officinalis, commonly known as marigold, has a long history of traditional use for supporting oral health, particularly the gums. Historically, calendula extracts and infusions have been used in Europe and other parts of the world as mouth rinses to soothe inflamed or bleeding gums, treat minor oral wounds, and promote general oral hygiene. The traditional rationale is largely based on calendula’s anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties, which are well-documented in herbal medicine texts.
While a number of in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated calendula’s antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, the number of robust clinical trials specifically examining its effectiveness for gum health in humans is limited. Some small studies and case reports suggest calendula-based mouthwashes may help reduce gingival inflammation and bleeding when used as an adjunct to standard oral care. However, these studies are generally low in quality or have small sample sizes.
Therefore, while there is a strong traditional basis for using calendula to support gum health, and some preliminary scientific data, the evidence is not yet strong enough to be considered fully validated by modern science. Nonetheless, its traditional use and preliminary findings justify ongoing interest and further research in this application.
