Calcium ascorbate is a mineral ascorbate form of vitamin C, combining calcium and ascorbic acid. Its use to support gum health is primarily justified by scientific evidence. Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis, which is a crucial structural component of gums and other connective tissues. Numerous studies have shown that vitamin C deficiency leads to scurvy, a disease characterized by swollen, bleeding gums and loosening of teeth. Supplementation with vitamin C, including in the form of calcium ascorbate, is effective in preventing and reversing scurvy-related gum issues. Furthermore, observational studies have linked low vitamin C intake to increased risk of periodontal (gum) disease, and some interventional studies suggest that vitamin C supplementation can improve certain gum health markers, such as gingival bleeding and inflammation, especially in those with suboptimal dietary intake.

Calcium ascorbate offers the benefits of vitamin C without the acidity of ascorbic acid, which may be advantageous for oral tissues. However, while vitamin C is established as crucial for gum health, there is less evidence specifically on the benefits of the calcium ascorbate form over other forms of vitamin C. The consensus in dental and nutritional science is that maintaining adequate vitamin C intake is important for gum health, and supplementation is justified in at-risk populations. Therefore, the use of calcium ascorbate to support gum health is scientifically valid, especially as a vitamin C source.
