Avens (Geum urbanum), also known as wood avens or herb Bennet, has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe. Historically, the root of avens has been used as an astringent and for its purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. In the context of oral health, avens was traditionally applied as a mouthwash or gargle to help manage mouth and gum problems, including gingivitis and mouth ulcers. The tannins and essential oils present in the plant are thought to contribute to these effects by reducing inflammation and acting as mild antiseptics. However, while traditional herbal texts and folk medicine practices mention avens for gum health, there is a lack of modern clinical research validating its effectiveness for this purpose. No clinical trials or systematic scientific studies have been conducted to confirm its benefits for gum health in humans. The available evidence is thus based largely on historical use rather than robust scientific validation. As such, avens may be considered for gum support from a traditional perspective, but its efficacy remains unproven by contemporary scientific standards.
