Evidence supporting the use of: Aloe
For the body system: Gums
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Aloe vera has been used traditionally for oral health and in supporting gum (periodontal) health. In recent years, scientific validation has begun to support its effectiveness. Several studies have demonstrated that Aloe vera gel contains anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties, which can be beneficial for gum health. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that Aloe vera mouth rinses and gels can reduce plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation, sometimes comparably to chlorhexidine, a standard dental antiseptic, but with fewer side effects. Compounds such as acemannan in Aloe vera are believed to contribute to its healing effects by promoting tissue repair and reducing inflammation. Aloe vera is also found in some commercial toothpastes and mouthwashes aimed at soothing gums or reducing bleeding and swelling. However, while the scientific evidence is promising, it is not yet conclusive or as robust as that for some conventional treatments. The overall evidence base is moderate, with most studies having small sample sizes or short durations. Further large-scale, long-term studies are still needed to fully establish its efficacy and safety for gum health. Nevertheless, Aloe vera is recognized in scientific literature as a supportive, adjunctive measure for maintaining or improving gum health.
