Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Indian mallow (Abutilon indicum) has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems for a variety of ailments, including inflammatory conditions like gout. The rationale for its use is largely based on its reputed anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties described in classical herbal texts. Preparations made from its leaves, roots, or seeds have been used as poultices or decoctions to help alleviate pain and swelling in affected joints. However, while some preliminary in vitro and animal studies indicate that Abutilon indicum possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, there is currently little direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for gout. There are no well-designed clinical studies or human trials that have rigorously evaluated its effect on uric acid levels or acute gouty arthritis. Thus, while its use for gout is rooted in tradition, the evidence base remains weak and consists mainly of anecdotal reports and traditional pharmacopoeias, rather than robust scientific validation.
