Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Honduran Sarsaparilla (Smilax spp.) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, including in Central and South America, where it has been employed for a wide variety of conditions, including those involving joint pain and inflammation such as gout. Historically, sarsaparilla was thought to be a blood purifier and anti-inflammatory agent. Its traditional use for gout is likely based on these general anti-inflammatory and detoxifying claims, as gout is characterized by painful inflammation due to uric acid crystal accumulation in joints.

However, there is little modern scientific research directly evaluating the effectiveness of Honduran sarsaparilla for gout specifically. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest sarsaparilla may have mild anti-inflammatory or antioxidant properties, no robust clinical trials have confirmed its efficacy for gout in humans. The connection to gout remains primarily based on traditional practice rather than on scientific validation. Thus, while it is used in traditional systems for gout and related inflammatory conditions, the supporting evidence is weak and largely anecdotal.
