Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ground Ivy (Glechoma hederacea) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, where it was once used for a variety of ailments, including gout. Historical herbal texts from the Middle Ages and later periods mention Ground Ivy as a remedy for gout and other inflammatory or arthritic conditions. The rationale was rooted in humoral theory and the plant’s perceived abilities to “cleanse the blood” and reduce swelling. However, these uses were based on empirical observation and traditional doctrine rather than scientific investigation.

Modern scientific research on Ground Ivy is limited, and there are no robust clinical studies supporting its efficacy in treating gout. A few laboratory studies have noted anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in Ground Ivy extracts, but these findings have not been translated into clinical practice or validated specifically for gout management. The mainstay of gout treatment remains pharmaceutical uric acid-lowering agents and anti-inflammatory drugs, with little evidence to support the use of Ground Ivy as an alternative or adjunct therapy. Therefore, while the plant has traditional use for gout, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak and not substantiated by modern science.
