Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Dioscorea oppositifolia, commonly known as Chinese yam, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is primarily used to tonify the spleen and stomach, support digestion, and nourish yin. There is some anecdotal and traditional reference to its use in conditions that involve inflammation or joint pain, including gout, but this is not a primary or well-documented indication. The rationale in TCM may be related to its perceived ability to strengthen the body and harmonize metabolic functions, which could theoretically be supportive in the management of gout. However, there is little to no direct clinical or preclinical scientific evidence supporting the use of Dioscorea oppositifolia specifically for gout. Most of the available studies focus on its effects for diabetes, immunity, and general antioxidant properties. As such, the use of Dioscorea oppositifolia for gout is based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation, and the strength of the evidence supporting this application is weak.
