Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cluster Fig (Ficus racemosa), also known as Indian Fig or Gular, has a long-standing place in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Siddha. It is reputed for its anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. In the context of gout—a condition marked by the deposition of uric acid crystals and inflammation—Cluster Fig has been traditionally used in India to alleviate joint pain and swelling. Some classical Ayurvedic texts mention its application in managing diseases related to vitiated "Vata" and "Pitta" doshas, which are loosely associated with inflammatory disorders. However, there is scant modern scientific evidence to directly support its efficacy for gout specifically. A few in vitro and animal studies have indicated that extracts of Ficus racemosa possess general anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically help with gout symptoms. Yet, there are no robust clinical trials or mechanistic studies directly linking Cluster Fig to uric acid reduction or gout symptom relief in humans. Thus, its use for gout is based primarily on tradition, with only weak supporting evidence from preliminary pharmacological studies.
