Evidence supporting the use of: Clerodendrum indicum
For the health condition: Gout
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Clerodendrum indicum (often misspelled as "Celrodendrum indicum") is traditionally used in various systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda and folk medicine, for the management of gout and related inflammatory conditions. The use is primarily justified by ethnobotanical reports and traditional knowledge. In Ayurveda, the plant is sometimes used as an anti-inflammatory and for treating "Vata" disorders, which can include joint pain and swelling akin to gout. However, direct scientific evidence specifically validating the use of Clerodendrum indicum for gout is limited. Most available studies focus on its general anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant properties, with in vitro and animal research suggesting the plant contains flavonoids and other phytochemicals that may reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. These mechanisms are theoretically relevant to gout, as the disease involves uric acid-induced joint inflammation. Nonetheless, clinical trials or direct evidence for its efficacy in treating or preventing gout in humans are lacking. Therefore, the evidence rating is low, and the justification for use is based more on tradition than on rigorous scientific validation.
