Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Borassus palm (Borassus flabellifer), also known as palmyra palm, has been used in traditional medicine systems in South and Southeast Asia for a variety of ailments. In certain traditional practices, parts of the Borassus palm, such as its roots, fruit, or sap, have been cited for their purported medicinal properties. Anecdotal and ethnobotanical reports sometimes mention its use to relieve symptoms of gout and other inflammatory conditions, likely due to the general anti-inflammatory reputation of some palm components. However, there is a lack of rigorous scientific studies specifically investigating Borassus palm in relation to gout or hyperuricemia (the underlying cause of gout). Most references to its use for gout are based on traditional knowledge, not clinical trials or pharmacological research. As a result, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for gout is weak and primarily based on traditional or cultural usage rather than validated scientific data.
