Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bengal Fig (Ficus benghalensis), also known as the banyan tree, has a longstanding history in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. It has been used to manage various ailments, including joint pain and inflammatory conditions, which include gout. The latex, bark, and leaves have been employed in traditional preparations, purportedly for their anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. However, scientific evidence specifically supporting the efficacy of Bengal Fig for treating gout is minimal to nonexistent. The traditional use is based largely on its general anti-inflammatory and analgesic reputation rather than on targeted clinical studies or robust pharmacological data concerning gout, which is a metabolic disorder characterized by uric acid crystal deposition in joints. Some preliminary phytochemical analyses indicate the presence of flavonoids, tannins, and other compounds with potential anti-inflammatory effects, but clinical trials or rigorous experimental studies on gout patients are lacking. Therefore, while Bengal Fig is traditionally used in some systems for gout-like symptoms, its use for this purpose is not supported by strong scientific validation, and the evidence remains largely anecdotal or based on broader claims of inflammation reduction.
