Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Propolis, a resinous mixture produced by honeybees, has a long history of use in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments, including infections. In some traditional systems, it has been used to support the treatment of sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea. The rationale is based on propolis’s observed antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in folk medicine. However, while propolis does show broad-spectrum in vitro antimicrobial activity—including activity against some bacterial pathogens—there is little to no direct clinical or laboratory evidence specifically supporting its use for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the causative agent of gonorrhea. Most references to propolis for gonorrhea are anecdotal or based on its general use for infections in ethnomedicinal practices, rather than controlled studies or validated historical documentation. Therefore, the evidence supporting its use for gonorrhea is weak and primarily traditional, not scientific. Modern medical guidelines do not recognize propolis as a treatment for gonorrhea, and antibiotic therapy remains the standard of care.
