Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

The use of the "Orchid tree"—a common name referring to several Bauhinia species, such as Bauhinia variegata and Bauhinia purpurea—to support or treat gonorrhea is primarily justified by traditional medicine practices, particularly in South Asia. In Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, various parts of the Orchid tree (most frequently the bark and leaves) have been described as possessing antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, and they have been used in folk remedies for a range of infectious diseases, including sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea. Ethnobotanical surveys and compilations of traditional knowledge mention the use of decoctions or pastes made from the bark or leaves of Bauhinia variegata in the management of gonorrhea symptoms.

However, scientific validation for this specific use remains very limited. While some preliminary studies have shown that extracts from Bauhinia species possess general antibacterial activity, there is little to no direct research evaluating their efficacy against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium responsible for gonorrhea. Published laboratory studies focus mostly on other pathogens or use in vitro assays that do not directly translate to clinical efficacy. Thus, while the traditional use is documented, robust scientific support is lacking, and the evidence is weak (rated 1/5).
