Evidence supporting the use of: Isatis
For the health condition: Gonorrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Isatis, particularly Isatis tinctoria (also known as woad) and Isatis indigotica, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is referred to as "Ban Lan Gen" (root) or "Da Qing Ye" (leaf). In TCM, Isatis is used for its purported "heat-clearing" and detoxifying properties, which are believed to be beneficial in treating various infections and inflammatory conditions, including those with symptoms resembling gonorrhea, such as urethritis or genital discharge. However, the use of Isatis for gonorrhea is based primarily on traditional practice rather than modern scientific validation. The available scientific evidence is minimal and indirect; while some in vitro studies suggest that extracts of Isatis possess antibacterial activity against certain pathogens, there is no robust clinical evidence or controlled trials specifically demonstrating efficacy against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium that causes gonorrhea. Most references to Isatis for gonorrhea are found in historical or ethnobotanical texts, not in contemporary clinical research. Thus, the evidence supporting its use for this condition is weak and based on traditional application rather than scientific proof.
