Boerhavia diffusa, commonly known as "Punarnava," has a history of traditional use in various systems of medicine, notably Ayurveda and folk medicine, for the treatment of genitourinary disorders, including gonorrhea. Traditional healers in parts of India, Africa, and South America have used the roots, leaves, or whole plant to treat symptoms associated with sexually transmitted infections, such as urethral discharge and inflammation. The rationale in ethnomedical literature often rests on the plant’s reputed anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and antimicrobial properties. However, scientific evidence to validate its efficacy specifically against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the causative agent of gonorrhea, is limited. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated antibacterial activity of Boerhavia diffusa extracts against a range of bacterial species, but robust, targeted studies against N. gonorrhoeae are lacking. Most available research focuses on the plant’s general antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions rather than direct anti-gonorrheal effects. Thus, while its use for gonorrhea is well documented in traditional medicine, scientific validation remains minimal, and clinical data supporting its effectiveness for this condition are absent. Standard medical practice does not recognize Boerhavia diffusa as a treatment for gonorrhea.
