Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Baccharoides anthelmintica (syn. Vernonia anthelmintica) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems in South Asia, particularly within Ayurveda and folk medicine. Its seeds and various plant parts are traditionally used for a range of ailments, including skin diseases, helminthic infections, and occasionally sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea. Ethnobotanical surveys and historical texts indicate that local healers have employed preparations of this plant for genitourinary complaints, which may include symptoms associated with gonorrhea. However, the use is largely based on empirical tradition and not on robust pharmacological justification.

There is little to no modern scientific research specifically validating the efficacy of Baccharoides anthelmintica in the treatment of gonorrhea. While some preliminary studies have identified antimicrobial properties in extracts of the plant, these have not been directly linked to Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the causative agent of gonorrhea, nor do they meet clinical standards for efficacy or safety for this indication. Therefore, while traditional use exists, the scientific evidence supporting such use is minimal or absent. Use for this purpose should be considered with caution, and not as a substitute for evidence-based medical treatments.
