Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Agrimonia pilosa, commonly known as hairy agrimony, has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in China, Korea, and Japan. It has been utilized for a variety of ailments, including gastrointestinal issues, bleeding disorders, and infectious diseases. In some traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) texts, Agrimonia pilosa is mentioned as part of herbal remedies intended to address symptoms associated with sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, particularly for clearing "damp heat" from the lower body. However, these uses are based on empirical tradition and the theoretical underpinnings of TCM rather than modern biomedical research.

There is little to no direct scientific validation for the efficacy of Agrimonia pilosa in treating gonorrhea specifically. While some laboratory studies have demonstrated that extracts from the plant possess general antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, these studies have not focused on Neisseria gonorrhoeae (the causative agent of gonorrhea) nor have they involved clinical trials in humans with this condition. As such, the evidence supporting its use for gonorrhea is primarily traditional, with minimal support from modern scientific research.
