Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is primarily used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for a range of health conditions, including thyroid imbalances such as goiter. In Ayurveda, ashwagandha is considered a "rasayana" herb—believed to promote vitality and balance in the body. Historically, Ayurvedic practitioners have used ashwagandha to support thyroid health, particularly hypothyroidism, which can sometimes present as goiter (thyroid gland enlargement). The rationale is that ashwagandha is thought to enhance thyroid hormone production and reduce stress (which is believed to contribute to thyroid dysfunction in Ayurveda).

However, direct scientific evidence supporting ashwagandha’s use specifically for goiter is limited. Some small clinical studies and animal research suggest that ashwagandha may increase levels of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), which could theoretically benefit individuals with hypothyroidism-associated goiter. For example, a few animal studies have shown increased thyroid hormone levels after ashwagandha administration, and a small number of human studies found improved thyroid profiles in people with subclinical hypothyroidism. Nonetheless, robust clinical trials evaluating its efficacy and safety for treating goiter are lacking. As such, while its traditional use is well-established, scientific support remains preliminary, and its application for goiter should be approached with caution and always under medical supervision.
