Rating (out of 5): 1

Gastrodia elata (Tian Ma) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has been historically used to treat various neurological and vascular disorders, particularly those involving the liver and wind in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory. In the context of glaucoma, Gastrodia is sometimes included in herbal formulas intended to "calm the liver" and "extinguish wind," which in TCM may be associated with symptoms such as headache, dizziness, and visual disturbances that overlap with some glaucoma symptoms. However, the traditional use is rooted in TCM syndromic diagnosis rather than a direct understanding of glaucoma as a disease of increased intraocular pressure and optic nerve damage. There is very limited scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Gastrodia for glaucoma. While some preliminary laboratory studies suggest that certain compounds in Gastrodia may have neuroprotective or antioxidant properties, there is currently no robust clinical research demonstrating its effectiveness in lowering intraocular pressure or preserving vision in glaucoma patients. Thus, its use for glaucoma is justified more by tradition than by scientific validation.
