Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Chinese salvia root (also known as Salvia miltiorrhiza or Danshen) is a well-known herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its historical use has been primarily for promoting blood circulation and treating cardiovascular diseases, but in some traditional sources, it has also been used for various eye conditions, including those thought to relate to increased intraocular pressure, which is a key issue in glaucoma. However, there is minimal direct historical literature specifically describing Danshen as a treatment for glaucoma itself. Instead, its use in eye health is generally based on its perceived ability to “clear heat,” promote circulation, and resolve “blood stasis.”
From a scientific standpoint, there is very limited research directly addressing the efficacy of Salvia miltiorrhiza in treating glaucoma. A few preclinical studies suggest that certain compounds in Danshen (such as tanshinones and salvianolic acids) may have neuroprotective and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically benefit optic nerve health. However, these findings are preliminary and mostly in vitro or in animal models, not in human clinical trials for glaucoma.
In summary, the use of Chinese salvia root for glaucoma is rooted in traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. Its historical application is more generalized to “eye problems” rather than glaucoma specifically, and current scientific validation for this indication is lacking.
