Evidence supporting the use of: Manganese
For the body system: Glandular System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Manganese is an essential trace mineral involved in many biological processes, including enzyme function, bone development, and antioxidant activity. Its role in the glandular system—specifically in supporting glands such as the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands—is mainly based on its function as a cofactor for enzymes involved in hormone synthesis and metabolism. For example, manganese-dependent enzymes are involved in the synthesis of thyroxine, a key thyroid hormone. Scientific studies have demonstrated that manganese deficiency can impair thyroid hormone production and alter glucose metabolism, potentially affecting the function of endocrine glands. However, while manganese is clearly necessary for normal physiological function and some glandular processes, direct evidence supporting manganese supplementation specifically for "glandular system support" in otherwise healthy individuals is limited. Most research focuses on deficiency states or animal models, and there is little clinical evidence demonstrating that manganese supplementation improves glandular function in the absence of deficiency. Thus, while the use of manganese for supporting the glandular system has a scientific basis at the biochemical level, the evidence for supplemental benefit in the general population is not robust.
