Evidence supporting the use of: DHEA
For the body system: Glandular System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a steroid hormone produced primarily by the adrenal glands, which are key organs within the glandular (endocrine) system. Its use as a supplement is based on its role as a precursor to both androgens and estrogens, hormones critical to various endocrine functions. Scientific studies suggest that DHEA levels decline with age, and supplementation has been explored for potential benefits in age-related hormonal decline, adrenal insufficiency, and certain endocrine disorders. Clinical trials have shown that DHEA supplementation can increase circulating levels of DHEA and its metabolites, and there is modest evidence it may benefit individuals with adrenal insufficiency, some cases of depression, and women with diminished ovarian reserve. However, evidence for its effectiveness in healthy individuals or wide-ranging endocrine support is limited and mixed. The Endocrine Society currently recommends against routine use of DHEA supplements due to insufficient evidence for broad benefits and the potential for side effects, including hormonal imbalances. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some clinical evidence supporting its use in specific glandular system disorders, overall support for general glandular health is moderate at best.
