Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bovine pancreas has been used in traditional and naturopathic medicine to support the glandular system, particularly for pancreatic health and function. The rationale for its use is rooted in the "like supports like" philosophy, which suggests that consuming animal organs may benefit the corresponding human organs. Historically, glandular extracts, including those from the pancreas, have been included in dietary supplements with the belief that they may provide enzymes or cofactors that support the human pancreas or overall glandular system. However, scientific validation for these claims is extremely limited. While pancreatic extracts (such as pancreatin) are used in conventional medicine to treat exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, these preparations are highly processed and standardized, and their clinical use is well-defined. In contrast, desiccated or whole bovine pancreas supplements, as found in glandular products, lack substantial evidence from controlled clinical trials to support their efficacy for general glandular or pancreatic health in otherwise healthy individuals. Furthermore, there is little evidence that orally consumed bovine pancreas delivers active enzymes or glandular factors in a way that would impact human glandular function, due to degradation by the digestive system. In summary, the use of bovine pancreas for glandular system support is primarily justified by tradition and historical practice rather than rigorous scientific evidence.
