Evidence supporting the use of: Beef
For the body system: Glandular System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Beef, specifically desiccated or glandular extracts from beef organs like the adrenal, thyroid, or pituitary glands, has been traditionally used in some alternative and naturopathic medicine practices to support the glandular (endocrine) system. This belief is largely rooted in the principle of "like supports like," an idea popularized in the early 20th century by proponents such as Dr. John R. Brinkley and later by the glandular therapy movement. The concept was that consuming animal gland extracts could help nourish or heal the corresponding human glands.
However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. Modern research does not provide robust clinical evidence that consuming beef gland extracts has a therapeutic effect on human glandular function. While beef is a source of protein, vitamins (such as B12), and minerals (like zinc and iron) that are important for general health, the specific use of beef or bovine glandular extracts for supporting human endocrine glands is not supported by rigorous clinical trials. Regulatory agencies such as the FDA have not approved glandular supplements for endocrine disorders, and concerns exist regarding safety and purity of such products. Thus, the support for beef as a glandular system remedy is primarily traditional, with little scientific substantiation.
