Barbasco is a common name for several plants in Latin America, most notably species in the genus Dioscorea (wild yam) and certain legumes. In traditional medicine, especially in Mexico and Central America, Barbasco (specifically Dioscorea mexicana and Dioscorea villosa) has been used for its potential effects on the glandular system, particularly relating to women’s reproductive health. The yam tubers contain diosgenin, a steroidal sapogenin that can be chemically converted into progesterone and other corticosteroids in the laboratory. While these traditional uses have led to Barbasco’s reputation as a natural hormone regulator or "phytoestrogen," it is important to note that the human body does not convert diosgenin into hormones naturally. Traditional healers, however, have prepared decoctions and tinctures for menstrual and menopausal symptoms, believing Barbasco supports glandular balance.
Despite this long history of use, the scientific evidence supporting Barbasco’s direct effect on the glandular system is limited. Most supportive claims are derived from its use as a raw material in pharmaceutical steroid synthesis, not from clinical studies in humans. Therefore, while there is a strong tradition of use for glandular and hormonal support, scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence level is modest, reflecting historical rather than research-based support.
