Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Plumbago zeylanica, commonly known as Ceylon leadwort or Chitrak, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda and traditional medicine in parts of Asia and Africa. Within these systems, it has been employed for a variety of ailments, including as a remedy for issues believed to be associated with "swollen glands" or lymphatic congestion. The root and sometimes the leaves are used in pastes, decoctions, or powders for external application or internal use, often to "reduce swellings" or "resolve tumors." However, the traditional texts frequently lack specificity regarding whether these "glands" refer precisely to lymph nodes by modern medical standards, and the descriptions are often generalized to any form of swelling or inflammation.

On the scientific front, there is minimal direct research evaluating the efficacy of Plumbago zeylanica specifically for swollen lymph nodes or lymphatic conditions. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of Plumbago zeylanica extracts, which could theoretically support its traditional uses for swellings. However, these findings are preliminary, not focused on lymphatic tissue, and have not been substantiated in human clinical trials. Thus, the evidence supporting its use for swollen glands remains rooted in tradition with little scientific validation.
