Plantain, which can refer to either Plantago species (such as Plantago major or broadleaf plantain) or the cooking banana (Musa spp.), is traditionally used in herbal medicine, especially in European, Asian, and Native American traditions. The Plantago species, in particular, have been employed as a remedy for various inflammatory conditions, including swollen glands or lymph nodes. Historical herbal texts and folk medicine accounts suggest that poultices and infusions made from plantain leaves were applied externally or consumed to help "draw out" infections, reduce inflammation, and soothe swollen tissues, including lymphatic glands. The rationale was based on the plant’s reputed anti-inflammatory, astringent, and wound-healing properties.

However, direct scientific evidence supporting the use of plantain (Plantago spp.) specifically for swollen lymph nodes is lacking. While some laboratory studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of Plantago extracts, these studies do not specifically address lymphatic swelling or glandular issues in clinical settings. The traditional use, therefore, is not strongly backed by modern clinical research, but it remains a part of herbal lore and practice. There is no evidence for the use of banana plantain (Musa spp.) for this purpose. Overall, the use for swollen lymph glands is rooted primarily in tradition, with limited supportive evidence from preclinical studies.
