Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Pagoda Tree (Sophora japonica) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where various parts of the plant—particularly the flower buds (known as Huai Hua Mi)—have been used to treat a range of ailments. However, its use for "glands" (interpreted here as swollen lymph nodes or lymphadenopathy) is not well documented in either traditional or modern sources. Most traditional uses focus on its ability to "clear heat," stop bleeding (especially in cases of hemorrhoids or bleeding in the lower digestive tract), and reduce inflammation. There are occasional references in herbal compendiums to its anti-inflammatory properties, which may have led practitioners to apply it to swellings or "knots" that could be interpreted as lymphatic swellings. However, there is a lack of direct historical specificity for the treatment of swollen lymph nodes. Scientific validation for this application is virtually nonexistent; no robust clinical or preclinical studies have specifically examined the effects of Pagoda Tree on lymphatic swelling or glandular inflammation. Thus, while traditional use might tangentially support its application for swellings in general, the evidence for its use specifically for swollen lymph glands is extremely limited and should be considered weak.
