Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that has been studied for its potential role in the management of Giardia lamblia infections (giardiasis). Several clinical and preclinical studies provide moderate scientific support for its use as an adjunct to conventional antigiardial therapies. In particular, randomized controlled trials in children with giardiasis have demonstrated that supplementation with S. boulardii can reduce the duration of diarrhea and accelerate the clearance of Giardia cysts when used in combination with standard pharmacological treatments (such as metronidazole). The proposed mechanisms include the modulation of host immune responses, direct antagonism of Giardia trophozoites, stabilization of the intestinal barrier, and competition for adhesion sites in the gut mucosa.
A notable study published in 2005 (Castaneda et al., Parasitology Research) found that children receiving S. boulardii plus metronidazole had a significantly higher rate of cyst clearance compared to those receiving metronidazole alone. However, most studies to date have been relatively small, and S. boulardii is generally not considered a standalone treatment for giardiasis. Instead, it is viewed as a supportive measure to reduce symptoms and possibly enhance the efficacy of standard therapy.
In summary, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the adjunctive use of S. boulardii in giardiasis, but it should not replace established antiprotozoal medications.
