Trichosanthes, particularly Trichosanthes kirilowii and Trichosanthes cucumerina (commonly known as snake gourd), has a longstanding history in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other Asian medicinal systems. It is primarily used for conditions related to the respiratory system, such as cough with phlegm and chest congestion, but its fruits, roots, and seeds have also been employed for digestive issues, including gas and bloating. The traditional reasoning is based on its purported abilities to “clear heat,” “resolve phlegm,” and mildly promote bowel movements, which may indirectly alleviate discomfort caused by indigestion, bloating, and gas.

However, the evidence supporting its use specifically for gas and bloating is mainly anecdotal or based on traditional herbal formulations rather than rigorous scientific validation. There are very limited clinical or preclinical studies directly evaluating the efficacy of Trichosanthes for these symptoms. Most references to its digestive benefits come from herbal compendia and classical TCM texts, where it is used as part of multi-herb formulas rather than as a standalone remedy. The mechanisms posited in traditional frameworks do not directly align with modern understandings of gastrointestinal physiology. As such, while there is a traditional basis for its use, the evidence is relatively weak (rated 2/5) and should be interpreted with caution.
